How to add a Product Coupon in Auctiva Commerce

A product coupon allows a customer to get discounts on items. You can limit the product coupon usage by selected user groups, date ranges, products, a minimum quantity purchased and by the number of product coupon uses. This tutorial will show you how to add a product coupon to your Auctiva Commerce store.

What is a Product Coupon?

A product coupon is a type of coupon that applies discounts to items in an order. The significant difference between a product coupon and an order coupon is that a product coupon can specify a minimum quantity that must be purchased to make the line items eligible for the product coupon. A product coupon also has the ability to be applied multiple times in a single line item. This means that the product coupon can apply multiple discounts to the order amount when there are multiple eligible products in a line item and the Repeat option is enabled for the coupon. In contrast, the order coupon applies a single discount for eligible line items in the cart. Take a look at the tables below for an example that demonstrates the differences between the product and order coupons.

ItemEachQuantityPrice
Tee-shirt$15.003$45.00
Order Coupon-$5.001-$5.00
Subtotal$40.00
ItemEachQuantityPrice
Tee-shirt$15.003$45.00
Product Coupon-$5.003-$15.00
Subtotal$30.00

In this example, the order coupon applies a single discount to the eligible line items, while the product coupon can apply discount for every eligible item when the Repeat option is enabled.

Coupon Limitations

A customer can only use one coupon (i.e., order coupon, product coupon and shipping coupon) per order unless all coupons to be applied to the order are enabled to allow combined coupons. When a customer attempts to apply an additional coupon that's not enabled to combine with other coupons, the previous coupon is removed. A prompt will display that tells the customer that the new coupon is in use and the other was removed. A customer can enter the coupon code for the removed coupon to re-apply the coupon. In this manner, a customer can enter in coupon codes repeatedly to see which coupon will give them the most discounted subtotal.

How to add a product coupon

A product coupon allows a customer to get discounts for items and can be limited to just the line item of a certain product or applied to multiple products in the line item when these items are eligible. Adding a product coupon will make it immediately effective unless you specify a date range outside the current date. A customer must also know the Coupon Code to apply the coupon to an order.

Step 1. Select coupon type.
  • Go to Marketing> Coupons.
  • Click on the Add Coupon button.
  • Select the radio button next to Product Coupon.
  • Click on the Next button. The Add Product Coupon page will load.
Step 2. Enter coupon information.
  • Name: Enter the name of the coupon. A customer can see the product coupon name in the Order Details at checkout.
  • Coupon Code: Enter the unique code for this product coupon. This code is the string customers will enter at checkout to receive the discounts from the coupon.
  • Discount Amount: You can choose a fixed amount discount for an entire order, or a percentage discount for an entire order. For a fixed amount discount, enter the value that will be discounted from an order and select Fixed Amount from the drop-down menu. This is a flat amount that is subtracted from the order amount. For a percentage discount enter the percentage amount in the field that will be discounted from the order and select Percent (%) from the drop-down menu. This option will discount the order amount by a percentage.
  • Quantity: This is the minimum quantity of an item that must be purchased to use this coupon. To designate a minimum, enter a number in the text field. Leaving it blank will indicate no minimum by default. The minimum quantity will always check against the quantity of items in a line item and will also be confined to the products that you've selected in the Product Rule field.
  • Repeat: If the Repeat checkbox is selected, this coupon will apply to multiple quantities of the line item. If the Repeat checkbox is unselected, this coupon will only be applied to a single line item.
  • Start Date: Check the option box to select the earliest day that the coupon will be effective. In the field next to the option box, click on the Calendar button to choose the date. When a date is selected, this date is the day that the shipping coupon will work. Leaving this field unchecked will make the coupon indefinitely effective unless an End Date is expressed.
  • End Date: Check the option box to select the last day the coupon will be effective. In the field next to the option box, click on the Calendar button to choose the date. When a date is selected, this date is the last day that the shipping coupon will work. Leaving this field unchecked will make the coupon indefinitely effective starting on an expressed Start Date. Enabling both a Start Date and End Date will give the shipping coupon a range of days that the coupon will be effective.
  • Uses per Customer: Enter a maximum number this coupon can be used by a single customer.
  • Max Uses: Enter a maximum number this coupon can be used by all customers in your store.
  • Allow Combine: To enable this coupon to work with other coupons, select the Allow Combine checkbox. A coupon with Allow Combine enabled will work with other Allow Combine enabled coupons. If you want this coupon to be the only coupon applied to an order, do not select this checkbox.
  • Product Rule: To indicate any product restrictions for this coupon, select your choice from the drop-down menu. The "Valid for any product" option will apply the product coupon to all products in your inventory. The "Valid only with selected products" option will allow you to add certain products that are eligible for this coupon. The "Not valid for selected products" option will allow you to add certain products that are ineligible for this coupon. When either the "Valid only with selected products" or "Not valid for selected products" options are selected, you will need to add products to the Product Rule. Click on the "Manage" link. The Linked Products page will load. Search for the products to be added to the Product rule and click the Add button next to the products. You can remove products by clicking on the Remove icon in the Linked Products box. Click the Finish button when you're done with this task.
  • Groups: To designate this coupon to be used only for certain users groups, click the radio button next to Selected Groups. New choices will appear. Select the checkboxes next to groups that are allowed to use this coupon.
  • Click on the Next button.
  • Click on the Save and Close button. The Manage Coupons page will load and you will see the coupon you just created.

This completes the task of creating a product coupon. You can check the product coupon usage by going to Marketing> Coupons. The uses per coupon displays in the Uses column of the Coupon table. You can click on the Uses link to view details. Coupon usage details are only available for orders with payments that have been processed in the Order Manager. You can also view Coupon Reports by going to Reports> Marketing> Coupons.
