How to add product images in Auctiva Commerce

Watch Video

Auctiva Commerce has advanced image tools that display a variety of product images in different ways. This tutorial will show you how to add images to a product and how the images will display on the storefront.

What is a Primary Image?

A Primary Image is the first selection in the Basic Mode of selecting images for a product. When a Primary Image is selected it is automatically chosen to be the Icon, Thumbnail and Standard Image for the product.

What is an Additional Image?

An Additional Image is any image that displays in the "More Images" option for a particular product. In Basic Mode for selecting images, any image selected after the Primary Image will be an Additional Image. Additional Images have a maximum image size of 500 pixels by 500 pixels.

What is an Icon image?

An Icon image is the smallest product image that displays on the storefront. The maximum image size for this type of image is 80 pixels by 80 pixels. You can change Icon image for a product in the Advanced Mode on the Product Images page.

What is a Thumbnail image?

A Thumbnail image is the main product image that displays when customers are browsing products in a category or in search results on the storefront. The maximum image size for Thumbnail images is 120 pixels by 120 pixels. You can change the Thumbnail image for a product in the Advanced Mode on the Product Images page.

What is a Standard image?

A Standard image is the largest product image that displays in the product page on the storefront. The maximum image size for a Standard image is 500 pixels by 500 pixels. You can change the Standard image for a product in the Advanced Mode on the Product Images page.

What is Alternate Text?

Alternate Text is an input field associated with a specific image. Alternate Text can be edited in the Advanced Mode of selecting images. Alternate Text is never displayed on the storefront. It's for search optimization purposes only. Typically, a merchant will enter in the manufacturer's name and model name of the product in this field.

How to add product images (Basic Mode)

Make sure the product images have been uploaded to Auctiva Commerce. Read the "How to upload images" tutorial for instructions on how to do that.

Step 1. View product.
  • Go to Inventory> Manage Inventory.
  • Navigate through the categories as necessary to find the product. Click on the Edit link of the product. The product's Details page should load.
  • Click on the Images tab to load the Images page.
Step 2. Browse Images (Basic Mode).
  • Click on the Pick Images button at the bottom of the Images page.
  • A page to view images on Auctiva Commerce will load.
  • View Images in Folder: Choose a folder to look for images.
  • Items Per Page: Choose how many images will display on this page for browsing purposes only.
Step 3. Pick Images.
  • Click on the image that should be the Primary Image. The Primary Image is the image that displays first on the storefront when customers are browsing products or viewing this product. The Primary Image in this Basic Mode for selecting images will be assigned to the Icon, Thumbnail and Standard image types. In the Advance Mode, these images can be changed individually.
  • Click on more images after the Primary Image is selected to assign these images as the Additional Images. They will display in the "More Images" section on the storefront. The order that the images are selected is the order that the images will appear in the storefront. A number will display on selected images for notation purposes only.
Step 4. Review Selection.
  • Review the Primary and Additional Images selected.
  • Click on any of the Images to unselect them if necessary. The Reset button will also clear all selections.
  • Click on the Done button when finished.

The Primary Image that is selected will be shown in all three image types (i.e., Icon, Thumbnail and Standard) on the Product Images page. A different image can display in each of these Display Positions in the Advance Mode.

How to change the Icon, Thumbnail and Standard Image (Advance Mode)

Using the Advanced Mode for selecting images, a merchant can select individual images for each image type.

Step 1. View product.
  • If the product's Images page is loaded, skip to Step 2.
  • Go to Inventory> Manage Inventory.
  • Navigate through the categories as necessary to find the product. Click on the Edit link of the product. The product's Details page should load.
  • Click on the Images tab to load the product's Images page.
Step 2. Find Images (Advance Mode).
  • Click on the "Pick Images Advance Options" button at the bottom of the Images page.
  • A page with URLs for every image will load.
  • Basic Images: this section includes the Icon, Thumbnail and Standard Image URLs. Alternate Text can be entered for each image.
  • Additional Images: This section includes all Additional Images and their respective Alternate Text fields.
  • Click on the Find icon for the image to be changed. The Manage Images page will load.

The Manage Image page can be navigated using the Image Management box that is located on the left-side column. In the Image Details table, images can be browsed. If you can't find the image you're looking for, try changing the folder using the Show field in the Image Management box. Also make sure to browse images on other pages in the Image Details table.

Step 3. Add Image.
  • Look for the image you want.
  • Click the Add icon to add the image in the Manage Image page. The Advance Mode page will load with the URL for the image that was selected, replacing the previous image in that field.
  • Change the Alternate Text for the image if necessary.
  • Repeat Step 2 to find and add different images as necessary.
Step 4. Review Images.
  • Review your choices by clicking on the View Basic Images button or the View Additional Images button.
  • If an Additional Image needs to be deleted, click on the Delete icon.
  • If an Additional Image needs to be added, click on the Add Additional Images button.
  • Tip: The order in which Additional Images appear can only be edited in the Basic Mode for selecting images.
Step 5. Save Images.
  • Click on the Save Changes button to finish.

This completes the task of changing individual image types for a product. Use this feature to setup unique product image options. Always make sure to review your changes on the storefront to make sure the images have been correctly chosen.
